Fragment of a Sarcophagus with Pastoral Scene Roman Imperial Period Ca. 270-300 CE Material Very fine-grain Carrara marble Dimensions 36.8 cm (height) x 32.5 (length) Condition A fragment with weathered surface Description Five animals are arranged in three rows of rugged landscape: a goat on top, two goats in the middle, and a horse (to the left) and cow (to the right) on the bottom. On the left are traces of a cloak belonging to a shepherd (possibly posed like the Good Shepherd) and on the right are vestiges of a tree. Provenance Allegedly from Porta Pia, Rome February 1928, Armando Pacifici purchased from L. Viti in Rome Location East wall of courtyard Bibliography Unpublished; see further Hammond archives
