Name/Title

Keystone for Italian Arch to Great Hall

Entry/Object ID

HM-327.2

Description

Archway made of volcanic pumice; 327.1 has 34 blocks; base and keystone in white marble; 327.2 has double eagle keystone. J. H. Hammond Jr. found this archway in a backlot somewhere in Naples. The arch blocks are made of volcanic pumice which originates from the area around Mt. Vesuvius. It is highly likely that this material came from the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D. which destroyed Pompeii and other Roman cities.
