Description

Painted wood statue of St. Mark, placed above the portal doors heading into the Great Hall from the courtyard. Oak with traces of original polychrome decoration. St. Mark is holding a Bible and standing on what may be a lion, as this is his symbol in Christian iconography as one of the four evangelists (Matthew: winged man; Mark: winged lion; Luke: winged ox; John: eagle). 12th c. wood carving from Padua, Italy or Finnish, circa 14th – 15th century Installed ca June 1940 (see blueprint 1940.6.1)
