Description

Child Sarcophagus Recut, with Dolphin and Strigillation Roman Imperial Period 2nd to 4th century, recarved in 1920s. Marble Dimensions (Christie's 1994) 29.85 cm (height) x 87 cm (length) x 36.8 cm (width) Condition A full evaluation is impossible since few photos of the sarcophagus are preserved. Damage to the top of the front on the left side, bottom of the right, and along the lower edge. Description A forger recarved the original plain or scarcely decorated sarcophagus chest in the 1920s. The diving dolphin is in the center of the front of the strigillated sarcophagus; a lion griffin (according to Christie's) appears on each narrow side. Discussion The forger also recarved HM-352. Provenance Said to be from the area of San Giovanni, Rome March 1928 Armando Pacifici acquired from Rondelli in Rome 1929? Pacifici sold to Hammond ca. 1994 deaccessioned 15 December 1994 sold at Christie's (New York) Location (former) Courtyard, south side under dining room window
