Entry/Object ID

HM-806

Description

Reproduction of Notre Dame de la Belle Varriere: Our Lady of the Beautiful Stained Glass Done by Jacques Simon in 1929 of a detail of the center section of a 13th century window at Chartres Cathedral. The Virgin with Child on her knee sits enthroned in the upper part of the window, surrounded by angels who are incensing and holding candles. These angels are probably the Seraphim of the first Hierarchy as Seraphim are “representatives of Divine Love, usually painted in red color and sometimes holding burning candles.” The Chartres Cathedral has 176 stained glass windows. La Belle Verriere is among the three oldest windows and dates from 1150. Almost all of the glass in the cathedral dates from between 1215 to 1240.
