Description

17thc German Bishop's Mitre; white silk with gold embroidery heavy tracery pattern; simulated insets in precious stone coloring, one sided faded from exposure to light, one side not. From Strasbourg Cathedral Hammond displayed this in the Gothic Room [text from 1977 guidebook by N Kline] "The mitre is a cap worn by bishops, archbishops and some abbots. Originally the mitre was a simple, low coneshaped cap with ribbons and decorative bands. However in the thirteenth century it evolved into a peaked cap with two non-functional ribbons (lappets) which symbolize the Old and New Testaments. The Hammond Mitre resembles mitres designed in the “neo-medieval” style by the English Catholic designer and architect, Augustus Welby Pugin (1812-1852). The orphrey band is embroidered in a series of geometric designs in gold galloon (narrow metallic trimming). Each square contains a simulated inset with precious stone coloring. To either side of the vertical band are symmetrical scrolled designs also made with gold galloon. The lappets have insets and a trellis fringe at the bottom edge."
