Description

Tapestry of Gathering of Manna, scene of group of people in mountain area, "M R D AUBUSSON I C" at bottom Woven in Aubusson, France 1955 Zalessky donation "The tapestry depicts the Old Testament story of the gathering of manna [Exodus: 16]. Moses, dressed in red, and gesturing upward with his left hand, appears in the upper right corner. The activity of the Israelites collecting the manna in the desert moves in a circular motion around Moses who provides the focus of the motion within the scene. Characteristic of this period, attention is given to perspective and the naturalistic depiction of the human figure. The tones of the figures change gradually so that the forms appear round and full. The border contains an arrangement of arms and armor entwined with floral designs with a crown in each corner." [N Kline, 1977]
