Description

Jesus Praying in Garden of Gethsemane with sleeping disciples 14thc German WOOD SCULPTURAL GROUP This remarkable sculptural group is carved from lindenwood. Lindenwood was frequently used for sculptures of this type because of its resemblance to stone. The scene depicted is the agony in Gethsemane. Christ is shown kneeling in prayer above the forms of his sleeping disciples. His form becomes the apex of the compositional triangle which is further emphasized by the background of highly stylized vegetation. The figures are compactly disposed into a grouping. Emotional agitation is shown by the troubled expressions of the sleeping figures and the restless folds of their garments. [text from 1977 guidebook by N Kline] Deaccessioned and Sold 2023 Extra side pieces (bushes & trees) found in storage. Reached out to Sotherby's, but current owner unknown so unable to reunite.
