Description

16th c. coral masonry set in wall on right hand side of spiral stairway next to drawbridge. These stones were recovered by Hammond from the ruins of the first church built by Columbus in the New World. This church, built in 1494 after Columbus’s second voyage, was constructed at La Isabela on the north side of the island (in today’s Dominican Republic). The settlement was abandoned in 1498.Today the site is managed as the Parque Nacional La Isabela. Coral stone was (and still is) a mainstay as a construction material on the island. Hammond collected these six stones on a four-month cruise he took aboard his yacht, the Ripple in 1934. Relying upon Christopher Columbus's sketch of Mole St. Nicholas (Hispaniola) and points south, Hammond navigated the route which reproduced in part, Columbus' voyage to the West Indies.
