Description

18thc Steeple-cup, dome top surmounted by animal on hind legs holding shield or coat-of-arms. Single band at base of top with slightly flared lip. Center portion in a trumpet shape. Decorated at center with a low relief oval design: knight's head in armor, side view, with a shield with a double diamond device. Flared base connected by thin-stemmed column, ball at center, double turnings at bottom. "Acquired by Henry Davis Sleeper (1878-1934) about 1907 and installed in 1908 in Beauport’s Medieval Hall (present-day China Trade Room). Photographed in situ in Beauport by Thomas Marr in 1910. Sold or gifted to JHH Jr in Summer of 1922 when HDS dismantled the Medieval Hall. Citation: Thomas Marr Photograph, Beauport Medieval Hall (Negative No. 17018), Historic New England.
