4.5" x 6.5" black and white photo on poster board of George Hammond 21st OVI. George Francis was born to George and Anna (McKimmey) Hammond on September 19, 1838 in Carroll County, Ohio. The Hammond family moved to McComb, where George attended country schools. George married Miss Elizabeth Seitz on October 28, 1858, and they had six children together; William Sherman, Elizabeth, Emma, Alfred, Amanda, Mary Jane. At the start of the Civil War, George enlisted in the Union army in Findlay. George became a part of the 21st Ohio Volunteer Infantry (OVI). He was present at the battles of Stone River, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, and Atlanta. He also participated in Sherman’s great march to the sea and traveled down to Louisville, Kentucky. George was discharged on July 25, 1865 in Columbus, Ohio. After being discharged, George moved to Union Township and made a home on 118 acres of land. George was considered a successful and progressive farmer who lived in Hancock County for more than fifty years. George passed away at his daughter’s home in Benton Ridge on September 26, 1916. He was buried in Clymer Cemetery in Mount Cory.
