2023.011.1Description
This storm buggy was made by the Heinzelman Carriage Company out of Belleville, Illinois, and was sold by the E. Wagner & Son Carriage business in Arlington, Ohio to Curtis Elsea and Inda McClelland, shortly after their marriage in 1895. The carriage has remained in the family, passed down from generation to generation, restored by Roger Rigel before donating it to the museum in 2023.
Heinzelman Carriage Company was founded in 1857 by John A. Heinzelman and Henry Timken. They constructed a new building for the business in 1874, on the site of their previous building. The previous building had been in use since 1863. The sons of Heinzelman took over the business in 1866, and three grandsons operated the business from 1892 to 1917.
Emanuel Wagner and his son Archie ran a buggy dealership on their farm halfway between Arlington and Williamstown on what is now State Route 68. The dealership known as E. Wagner & Son was started at least by 1900, where Archie is listed in that year’s census with the occupation “dealer in carriages.” Advertisements for the business appeared in The Arlingtonian, The Findlay Daily Courier, The Findlay Republican, and the Weekly Jeffersonian, between 1899 and 1916. Emanuel Wagner passed away in 1916, and Archie carried on the business until 1920, when he retired and moved to Findlay.Collection
