Colonel James McCleery Neibling lost an arm May 28th 1864 Pumpkin Vine Creek Near Dallas Georgia Corporal, Co. G, 2nd Ohio Infantry, Mexican War. Sheriff, Hancock County, Ohio, 1856-1861. Lt. Col., 21st Ohio Infantry (3 months), April 27, 1861. Honorably mustered out Aug. 12, 1861. Lt. Col., 21st Ohio Infantry (3 years), Sept. 5, 1861. Colonel, 21st Ohio Infantry, Dec. 20, 1862. Commanded 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, XIV Army Corps, Army of the Cumberland, March 12-May 3, 1864. Shell wound right forearm (amputated), New Hope Church, GA, May 28, 1864. Resigned Dec. 6, 1864, due to severe neuralgic pain from amputated arm. Postmaster, Findlay, Ohio, 1867-1869.
