A photograph of Harpeth Hall students learning to work with power tools alongside an instructor during a Winterim class sometime in the 2000s. Per the 2000-2006 Winterim course catalogs, several courses were offered that provided students the opportunity to work with tools and participate in building/construction: the Techie course (offered annually), in which students helped to build theatre sets; "Everything and the Kitchen Sink" which was "designed to learn about the gadgets around us - how they work, and how to fix them. We will focus on items in the house and garage and explore items of individual interest. Be prepared to get down and dirty with tools - we will be taking things apart!"; and "Tool Time" (course details: "Ever wield a hammer, loosen a lug nut, or use a ratchet? Anticipating your first car? Learn the importance of routine maintenance; learn how to change a tire; and see how the car was built. Then design, build, and finish your own wood project for your room—a shoe shelf or book shelf or CD rack.")

Harpeth Hall StudentsContext
Harpeth Hall’s Winterim program was created to “provide for students a worthwhile learning experience in an atmosphere significantly different from the traditional classroom” and give “each student the opportunity to explore her own specific field of interest.” The three-week experience takes place every January and allows upper school students the unique opportunity to develop new interests, travel to unfamiliar places, and explore potential careers.
Students in 9th and 10th grades enroll in project-oriented courses on campus presented by school faculty and professionals from around the country, while students in 11th and 12th grades engage in internships, academic travel, international exchanges, or independent study.
Planning occurred in 1972, and the first "Winter Term" was rolled out in 1973. In 1974, a more robust program was developed and did include some travel. This was also the first year of an official Winterim catalog.Collection
