Scope and Content

Two Ward-Belmont admission reference letters, seeking information on Miss Lillian Lewis of Hoopestown, Illinois and Miss Eula Kutchler of Avon, Illinois. Dated July 6, 1915 and July 1, 1915, respectively. Sent by Jennie Taylor Masson, Registrar and Director of the School of Secretarial Work. The seven questions asked of references included how long and intimately they have known the applicant, if she is studious, if she is truthful, what (if any) her mental or moral weaknesses are, if she is in good health and has any pulmonary difficulties, if she is companionable and pleasant toward other girls, and if she is obedient and respectful to authority. Lillian Lewis's reference was a member of the clergy, and Eula Kutchler's was the principal of her high school in Avon, Illinois.
