Scope and Content

A photocopy of two newspaper clippings. The first, titled "Ward-Belmont Essay Writers Ranked High," discusses the Atlantic Monthly's 1926 student essay contest in which four of the twenty-four essays selected by the editors of the magazine for final judgment were written by Ward-Belmont students (Alene Wharton, Sara Powell, Margaret O'Connor, and Dorothy Brain). Dorothy Brain won second prize in the contest. The second, titled "In Iris Pageant," discusses an Iris Pageant performed at the Parthenon in Nashville, Tennessee featuring over 150 Ward-Belmont students. Leading roles were given to Nancyann Schmid '35, who played Iris, Mary Lee Wilson, and Jean Stuart.

Context

Dorothy Brain, originally from England, was proctor of Heron Hall dormitory during her first year at Ward-Belmont and specialized in music. Nancyann Schmid graduated from Ward-Belmont in 1935 and was president of the Wordsmiths literary club.
