Scope and Content

A Ward-Belmont tea room token, good for ten cents in trade, which could be used by students to purchase food and drink.

Context

The tea room, once located in the basement of Heron Hall, was a popular destination for Ward-Belmont students to gather for socializing, dances, club meetings, and meals. Fruit, sandwiches, candy, and treats could be purchased from the counter, and students often lamented the tea room’s effect on their figures. There was a tea room committee (1926 Milestones), and The Wandering Blues, a school jazz band, would perform there and at social club teas (1929 Milestones). In the 1931 Milestones yearbook, a student notes they could now go to the tea room for hot chocolate on Fridays; you will also find “On Going to the Tea Room,” a short story from the perspective of a student trying to avoid going to the tea room as she cannot resist the treats sold there, such as lemonade, chocolate-covered cakes, chocolate sundaes, and Milky Way and Goo-Goo candy bars. In 1949, the Spanish Club held a “typical Spanish supper” in the tea room, while the Speech Club held a Christmas dinner meeting there.
