Description

Two wigs, worn by students playing the role of George Washington and/or gentlemen in the George Washington Day Celebration. Younger students played either a solider, a sailor, or a lady or gentleman; two older students were chosen to play George and Martha Washington.

Context

The George Washington Day Celebration was a tradition that began at Belmont College for Young Women, developed into a costume ball and dance at Ward-Belmont, and was transferred to Harpeth Hall, where it continued as a special all-school program performed by Middle School students until 2020.
