Description

Harpeth Hall students pictured at the airport during travel to the 1981 Winterim trip to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, dubbed the "Winter Wonderland" trip. Details from the 1981 Winterim Course Catalog: "January is the season to visit these glamorous, glittering, glorious sites when the cultural life is in full swing; it is the season to visit the small, quaint medieval towns without the hoards of summertime tourists; it is the season when winter sports are at a peak." The group first flew to Berlin, Germany and had "two full days to tour both East and West Berlin, seeing such sights as Checkpoint Charlie, the Brandenburg Gate, Marx-Engels-Platz and Bellevue Castle." Students also attended the Opera and, in Frankfort, were driven "along the famous 'Bergstrasse' to Heidelberg, the oldest university town in Germany." After touring "the medieval town and its castle and university," they travelled to Rothenburg and stayed for two nights before departing for Munich. There for two full days and three nights, sights seen included the Tachau, the Bavarian Royal Castles, the Linderhof Castle, the German Museum, and the New City Hall, "where the Glockenspiel, a set of mechanical figures, perform the famous Munich 'Schafflertanz'. Also included [was] the world famous Hofbrauhaus (Court Brewery) and an excursion to Oberammagau for lunch and a tour of the playhouse, the home of the world-famous 'Passion Play'." Leaving Germany by train, the group then travelled to Vienna, Austria, staying three nights and two full days. Sightseeing included "the Hofburg (former Imperial Winter Residence and scene of the Vienna Congress); the Ringstrassee, with its magnificent buildings like the Opera House, National Museums, the University and the Parliament; St. Charles' Cathedral (Vienna's most beautiful Baroque Church); the Philharmonic Orchestra; Belvedere Castle; Schonbrunn Castle, the former summer residence of the Hapsburg monarchs; Schubert's residence; and the site of the Imperial Hunting Lodge," as well as "the home of the Lippizans" and "a performance at the Opera House one evening." Their next stop was Salzburg for two nights, where they saw "where 'The Sound of Music' was filmed and [drove] out to Bertchesgarten to the famous Salt Mines." Students were provided with special clothing in the mines, "so you can take the elevators in, and use the slides and walkways comfortably." From that location, they could also see Hitler's "Eagle's Nest." If the Mozart Week was in progress, students would have attended a performance of the Marionettes. After leaving Salzburg, students drove to Innsbrook, a "beautiful Austrian town nestled in the Bavarian Alps" and "the site of previous winter Olympic games." A walking tour of the city was provided, and students could "venture up to the ski jump facilities just behind the town." The trip's last stop was "Engelberg, a charming ski resort for a weekend of skiing" before returning home. Miss Patty Chadwell, chairman of the Physical Education department, and Mrs. Mary Lee Matthews Manier, librarian, were the faculty sponsors for the trip. Chadwell is pictured at the far left of this photograph.

Context

Harpeth Hall’s Winterim program was created to “provide for students a worthwhile learning experience in an atmosphere significantly different from the traditional classroom” and give “each student the opportunity to explore her own specific field of interest.” The three-week experience takes place every January and allows upper school students the unique opportunity to develop new interests, travel to unfamiliar places, and explore potential careers. Students in 9th and 10th grades enroll in project-oriented courses on campus presented by school faculty and professionals from around the country, while students in 11th and 12th grades engage in internships, academic travel, international exchanges, or independent study. Planning occurred in 1972, and the first "Winter Term" was rolled out in 1973. In 1974, a more robust program was developed and did include some travel. This was also the first year of an official Winterim catalog.
