Scope and Content

A program for the Twentieth Century Club meeting of February 25, 1920. The meeting consisted of roll call, a semi-annual report from the club treasurer, collection of outstanding dues, an introduction of members of the Amusements club group, and the program itself. Entertainment included several musical performances (piano, violin, and vocal) and a poetry/prose reading.

Context

Em Neville Cochran, leader of the Amusements club group, was originally from Meridian, Mississippi and was a member of the Senior Middle class in 1920. She served as the T.C.C. secretary in 1921, as well as treasurer of the Athletic Association in 1920 and 1921, and graduated from Ward-Belmont as a senior in 1921. Per the 1925 Hyphen archives, she married a Mr. Eugene Damon and moved to Tampa, Florida after her graduation. The Twentieth Century Club (T.C.C.) was a student organization and one of ten social clubs at Ward-Belmont, organized November 24, 1916. The club's purpose was an excerpt from English poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson's collection Idylls of the King, specifically “Gareth and Lynette" (1872): "Live pure, speak true, right wrong, follow the King, Else, wherefore born!" The club's motto was "Ideas and Ideals." Per the 1943 Milestones yearbook, club members "strive toward one goal - the maintenance of the high ideals of both their club and their school."
