Gilbertine Douglass Moore (often called Gilly) was a prominent graduate of Ward-Belmont. She was born on May 21, 1914 to Randolph Gilbert Moore and Essie Douglass Moore in Franklin, Kentucky. Born at home at 321 South College Street, Gilbertine would reside in the same house her entire life. She attended Franklin public schools prior to matriculating at Ward-Belmont School (2 years) and Vanderbilt (2 years) in Nashville, graduating in 1937. Ms. Moore never married. After getting her degree, Gilbertine obtained a job with the Farmer’s Grain Elevator in Franklin. Partly through necessity and partly through interest she began a study of the technique of testing seed for quality and content. Several years later, she became owner and operator of Franklin Seed Laboratory, which became known as a business that hired women employees. At the time there was only one other such facility in Kentucky. Gilbertine joined the Society of Commercial Seed Technologists in 1951. She sold the business in 1966.
Moore was a dog lover and was a member of the Nashville Humane Society. She also enjoyed reading, photography, birdwatching, opera and nature. She was a member of the Nashville Opera Association and the Metropolitan Opera Association. Moore, an amateur artist, [illustrated] several of her own books as well as Evelyn Thurman’s The Canary Who Wants to Talk. Gilbertine authored four books: Tyree Springs: A Memory (1972), Gilly Goes to Ward-Belmont (1973), Never Another Mam-ma (1974), and History of the R. H. Moore Drug Company, Franklin, Kentucky: A Century of Progress (1974). Ms. Moore died on July 30, 2008 at her residence and was interred in Franklin’s Greenlawn Cemetery.
