A photocopy of a letter from Mr. William Waller and Mrs. Susan S. Souby to the patrons of the Harpeth Hall School, dated July 25, 1951. The letter served to provide an account of the progress being made in the establishment of the new school. Names of the faculty (all of whom were former members of the Ward-Belmont faculty), first board of trustees, and the 167 students comprising the first Harpeth Hall senior, junior, sophomore, and freshman classes are listed. Courses were taught in English, mathematics, the sciences, languages, history, physical education, choral work, speech, and art. Construction of fire escapes, lunch room space, the athletic field, tennis courts, back driveway, and a new building containing six classrooms alongside the auditorium-gymnasium building was discussed. It was noted that donations towards the construction, regardless of amount, would be "gratefully received."Context
William Waller, Sr. was Harpeth Hall’s first Board of Trustees Chair. His leadership proved instrumental in the formation of the school. One pivotal task was the selection of Mrs. Susan Souby as Head of School. In turn, she brought together an excellent faculty to carry forward Ward-Belmont’s tradition of excellence in educating young women. Mrs. Souby was an English teacher at Ward-Belmont and the first Head of School at Harpeth Hall.Collection
