Course details from the 1999 Winterim course catalog: "This is a two-part course. One part of the course will involve learning how to manage your money, the other CPR. Imagine you've just graduated from college and you have your first job. In this class, you'll learn about finding a place to live, dealing with credit cards, insurance, banking, and budgeting. You'll find out about food and living expenses, writing checks and keeping a checking account, saving, and investing. You'll learn to use Quicken, the country's most popular home financial software. You'll encounter taxes, learn about social security and withholding, and you'll even learn to fill out income tax forms! The second part will provide the students with instruction and practice in first aid and CPR. Students who complete the necessary requirements will be certified in both first aid and CPR at the completion of the course." This course was limited to a minimum enrollment of 30 students and a maximum enrollment of 70.Photograph Details

Harpeth Hall’s Winterim program was created to “provide for students a worthwhile learning experience in an atmosphere significantly different from the traditional classroom” and give “each student the opportunity to explore her own specific field of interest.” The three-week experience takes place every January and allows upper school students the unique opportunity to develop new interests, travel to unfamiliar places, and explore potential careers.
Students in 9th and 10th grades enroll in project-oriented courses on campus presented by school faculty and professionals from around the country, while students in 11th and 12th grades engage in internships, academic travel, international exchanges, or independent study.
Planning occurred in 1972, and the first "Winter Term" was rolled out in 1973. In 1974, a more robust program was developed and did include some travel. This was also the first year of an official Winterim catalog.
Per the 1999 Winterim catalog, the program "is grounded in the conviction that designating time during the academic year for a challenging alternative curriculum helps us fulfill the mission of the school. Through Winterim we reaffirm our belief that important learnings are not limited to the classroom and laboratory or to traditional offerings in our eight-period day. Further, we expect our students to discover their connection to the larger community through intensive learning, service, internship, and travel. The program, both on-campus and off-campus, provides opportunities for students to experiment with new ideas and acquire new skills, as well as explore interests and career possibilities. It encourages the development of an open and inquiring spirit toward new experiences."Collection
