Scope and Content

Two letters sent in 1929 by John Wynne Barton, Vice President of Ward-Belmont at the time, to a Miss Virginia Lockett in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and a Mrs. J. L. Elliott in Mason City, Iowa. The letters discuss an upcoming chimes dedication event and concert.

Context

The Belmont Tower and Carillon is an iconic structure on the campus of Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. The tower is listed in the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Belmont Mansion registration. In 1928, a twenty-three bell carillon (the "Alumnae Chimes") was installed in the tower on the Ward-Belmont school campus. This year was the first year the tower served as a carillon. On April 12, 1929, the Alumnae Chimes were formally dedicated at the event Barton refers to in his letters. The chimes were donated to the school by approximately 3,000 alumni nationwide and cost $13,000 at the time. John Wynne Barton served as the Vice President of Ward-Belmont beginning in 1927, and assumed the role of President after the death of Dr. J. D. Blanton in 1933. Barton passed away on September 2, 1936.
