A letter from Thomas D. D. Quaid, Dean of Faculty at Ward-Bemont, to Mrs. Jack E. Fisher, mother of Emma Jean Fisher Hawes (Ward-Belmont class of 1929). Dated June 11, 1929. This letter was in response to Mrs. Fisher sending a blank transcript to the school in order to transfer Emma Jean's credits to Cornell University. Mr. Quaid notifies Mrs. Fisher that her daughter's record was indeed sent to Cornell, and while he was unable to determine if Emma Jean was the youngest graduate of Ward-Belmont, she was one of very few students who graduated so young and her "unusually high grades...[made] the achievement even more remarkable."Context
Emma Jean Hawes (née Fisher - married to David B. Hawes), originally from Kentucky, went on to become a professional bridge player after graduating from Ward-Belmont and Cornell University. She held several national and world titles during her career. She passed away in 1987, and was posthumously inducted into the American Contract Bridge League in 2002. While at Ward-Belmont, she was a member of the Anti-Pandora social club, the orchestra (in 1927, 1928, and 1929), and served as secretary of the Kentucky Club '27-'28.
Thomas D. D. Quaid earned his B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Oklahoma, and taught psychology and education in addition to his role as Dean of Faculty at Ward-Belmont in 1929.Collection
