11 P.M. Plantsville, Ohio Sep 5, '97.
Darling Bertha: I am at home tonight. I came yesterday afternoon from Athens, leaving there 3:30 and arriving at Sharpsburg 7:30. I then walked to Frank's and talked them until 12 and then came up home, removed my shoes, crept in and went to bed and when they called to breakfast I got up and walked right into the room where they were eating breakfast no one thinking of me being nearer than Athens. I went to S.S. and church. After church Howard and I hitched to the buggy and went to Lucy's for dinner, stopped a moment at Uncle Wm's back to Geo. Hanson's a few moments, and then to the Union after which I stopped at Frank's a few moments and then went to Alva's, came up home, talked everybody to bed except father and then I held him two hrs in a general talk in which I revealed all to him. It seemed to do him ever so much good and he said he would be very proud to welcome you to his roof.
I have missed you wonderfully and yet I have been talking about you almost all the time.
I cannot express in this space all the cheering words that have been tendered me, but suffice it to say that you “my Darling” will receive a hearty welcome in the family. How happy I feel tonight although sleepy and worn. At Bartlett Mon. morning. Will go to Athens this P.M. and think I shall venture to W. Tues. morning so far as I can see now. I am at P.O. and will not write more this time. Hoping to see you soon I remain your devoted Lover,
J. H. Harris.
