Oct. 1, 1896.
Miss Lambert,
Westerville, Ohio.
Darling Bertha: I just arrived and am at P.O. waiting for mail. Of course I met the train in good time. I thank you for waking me as you did. I think I might have slept until 8 had you not done so.
Tell Carrie I didn't see Fred so he must have gotten home O.K. I enjoyed her tease very much, but do not see why the temperature of the room varied so.
I guess you will forgive me for not giving the parting demonstration this morning for I thought Ira might tell and there would be another squash combination. I found a long hair on my left sleeve just a little while ago, where do you suppose it came from?
I feel sorry for you today on account of your work and I feel a little sorry for myself too as I commence work again all by myself. But perhaps this experience will be turned to good account.
I had such a loving visit with you that it makes me feel like making a greater effort than ever before.
This is the first time I ever stopped at this place. As I hear the frivolous conversation of the men about me it makes me feel like I want to continue in study until I get a burning zeal for study in the ways of righteousness and wisdom.
God will provide a way for us in some way and I feel like trusting Him fully. Let us ask Him to so arrange His Providence so we may be able to finish our school work and fit ourselves for the best possible service in His causes.
I am so glad that you are in school and that you so fully realize what a blessing it is to you. It is inspiring to see the way in which you are sacrificing and working to continue your school work. Pray for me “Dear.” The mail is open and one letter only, but not the one. May God bless you and keep you very near to Him. I don't know what my work will be here but, think you may address me here making your letter subject to return.
Your devoted but lonesome Lover,
J. H. Harris,
Lancaster, Ohio
