Context

MALCOLM L. SMITH P.O. Box 6712 Washington, D.C. 20020 January 21, 1980 Dear Bette, No doubt you have wondered why you have not heard from me this winter. Early in December I was busy here in connection with our church fund-raising campaign. Then we flew to Dallas to visit Stephen and Margaret and to be there for the wedding of Linn Smith. On Christmas eve we flew over to West Palm Beach and had two weeks with our daughter and her family. It was enjoyable but, without our own car, it was difficult to go out anywhere else, especially since it was a very busy time for them. We were happy to stay with the grandchildren but did wish we could get out to see other people, including you folks. I needed to come back for meetings here; also, we get uneasy about our rather isolated house. se we came home on January 9. Even the 8 to 10 inch snow was pretty well gone and since then the weather has not been too wintry. Your greeting and note were waiting when we returned. I'm sorry the gathering you suggested can't include us this time. Another time we will drive ourselves or arrange for a rental [End of Page 1] car in advance and hope to arrange things here so we can stay longer. Have you discovered any more Lambert information since you wrote on the subject? My book was favorably received by most people who have read it but not many of the Lamberts have seemed to want to get it. However both Phil Charles and Dan Harris do have it. Of course it is primarily a story of the Smiths. Did you hear from Pauline Warfel in recent months? I have not and suspect that she may not be well. A great, great grandson of Daniel Lambert sings in the boys choir at the National Cathedral - he is Jay Harris. I wonder what the Rev. Daniel would think if he could be present for a service in that majestic place. It is certainly a great contrast to the little meeting houses on his rural circuit. Our best wishes to both you and George. Sincerely, {Malcolm}
