Context

Sat. Morning. Dear Richard: Of course I was delighted to get your letter. I only mentioned it because I thought you might have sent it and I had not received it. I seem to have very little recollection about what went into that account but I surely did not have that much money in there. As I recall we just started that to have money where I could draw from for the household shopping. So not doubt the most of it came from your pocket. I sure do not feel right to take that check. If you cut it down to $25, I might consider it. I went with Caroline to missionary meeting yesterday. James is in Chicago, he has charge of the music at Pres. Ministers' Convention. Will be back Mon. noon. So — I am returning your check and would feel much better if you cut it in two. I seem to be improving slowly. With love Mother. Tues. Eve, My Dear Boy: Your precious letter came today. I was so happy to hear from you. It was just as I thought you were driven by your work. I have been reading a book on great musicians and I have decided you are one of them. Well I feel much better over this check than the other and thank you for your generosity. I can honestly say I am beginning to feel much stronger. I went with Caroline to the grocery store today down the hill three blocks. It was some task to get up the hill again but I made it and feel no worse because of it. The folks are out some where this evening as they are most evenings. I have been at church the last two Sundays. James gave a fine address "Laymen On the March" the Sun. after he was in Chicago & the people were much pleased. Last Sun. Rev. Taylor gave a masterful Sermon on "The Miracles of Jesus." He gives a wonderful expository Sermon. I don't know where I have heard his equal. The other night they had a Rummage Sale at the church and made about $75.00. They had everything from neck-ties to frigid air machines. I also had a letter from Dan today. John is having trouble with tonsils. He also told me that Margie has been in the hospital again. I presume it is for another kidney stone. I don't how she can stand so much. I understand Patty has a job at a music center or some such place in Detroit. I think Dan is to sing at Burkhart's church some time soon. He also goes to Joplin, Mo. to judge some contests. My boys seem to be a busy bunch of actors. Well, I am glad Grove City solved her mystery and the women can again sleep. I hear some deer have been discovered on the streets of Cleveland. Thurs. A.M. My letter seems to be on the installment plan. Last eve., I went with James to the church, where they had dinner and then an address by one of the Univ. Profs. He is teacher in Bible and told us how quite recently manuscripts have been discovered dating back at least a thousand years earlier than our Bible. One gets lost in such mysteries. Diane is doing well in her piano work. She now practices in the morning instead of the evening. I am glad Spring is on the way. People say it has been a mild winter, but it has been a shivery one for me. Use the money I enclosed for any thing you like — maybe a good dinner. I am getting anxious to see you. Don't go too hard. With loads of love and good wishes Mother
