My dear brother -
I have not been unmindful of the fact that this coming Saturday makes you twenty years old. Am I right as to the age? Or is it twenty-one?
Twenty years should make you realize and seriously contemplate that you are entering upon another decade — one that is most important in your whole life — the one that should be the time when you are building, achieving, aspiring and enjoying the freshness of youth. I have seen so many young men this past year who have failed to take advantage of opportunities and are plunged into merely a humdrum of merely existing on a wage and not future ahead.
Make your college days count, as I know you have and will. Above all cultivate a thirst for knowledge, for that which brings an inner culture and a knowledge, which will make service your highest mission.
I am sending you a book the contents of which were written by a college student who lived so much while he did live. Read it — it should inspire you to more noble efforts.
Again with best wishes, I remain
Affectionately
Your brother
Jimmie
