Context

[East Northfield, MA, to Miss Bertha Lambert, Iberia, Ohio, “Morrow Co.”] Marquand Hall East Northfield, Mass. July 5, 1895. Miss Lambert, Iberia, Ohio. My Loving Bertha: As a few moments present themselves now I shall respond to the cheery words of welcome which came in your letter last evening. We certainly are on the mountain top in every respect. Saying nothing of the spiritual power I never saw a more enthusiastic (in a true sense) crowd than was exhibited yesterday. The evening was given up to the colleges and such a time as they did have. All in order the different institutions sang their college songs and gave their yells, including speeches from representatives from U.S., Canada, Gr. Britain, Japan and the poor Indian. The spiritual work is intense. I did not send you the papers because the reports are very poor and beside the complete report will be published in the Northfield Echoes which will be in book form which I think will be so much nicer and complete for you than the papers. While I have been on the mt. top yet I seemed to rise considerable higher as I drank the meaning from your words, realizing too that the pen is inadequate to express half of what you really did feel. I did not think of the six months anniversary, but I did think of you, and if your life seems sweeter and more hopeful to you, how much more might I say the same concerning my own life. I certainly do thank God for your life and that we have been placed where we might come in contact with living personalities. I surely rejoice with you in your work and trust that God may be pleased to prosper you to the end of saving humanity. It gives me pleasure to say that so far as I now see I will be with you on Wed. next. We leave here Mon. evening at 5 and get to N.Y. at 7 in the morning and leave there 9:30 A.M. 2:00 P.M. 6:00 7:50 8:00 P.M. to start as late as 2 P.M. will put me to Pittsburgh 2:00 A.M. where I wait until 5 or 7 in the morning arriving at Crestline 12:50 11:40 (noon) 12:25. I shall try to get to St. James at 1:30. You need not discommode yourself in the least about meeting me because I never was lost yet and can walk a good gait. I anticipate a nice visit with you and in turn for your experience you have to relate will tell you something of this conference. More than one hundred colleges are represented from Maine to Cal. while Canada, England, Scotland, Wales, Japan, India, Mexico, and Prince Edward island are represented. Some of the strongest men of the U.S. are the speakers. Moody certainly is a power. It is good to be here. As I want this to go in a few moments I will leave the rest until I see your pleasant face. May God bless you and keep us both safe until we meet. With pure love I am yours J. H. Harris.
