Context

[Westerville, OH, to Mr. J. H. Harris, Ada, Ohio] Westerville O., Feb. 16, '96. Mr. Harris, Ada O. My Dear Joe: — I will spend a short time with you although it is 10 P.M. so if I do not stay as long as usual you will pardon the short call I hope. This has surely been another blessed Sabbath, spent in the service of the Lord but He has fully repaid me for all my work. I thought I would spend most of this day at home but work seemed to come before me and I tried to do it. Miss Linard and I were asked to visit two old people who are not able to attend church. We did so and brought such a blessings to all concerned. They just seemed to accept us as though we were sent by God's hand. With their eyes filled with tears and praise on their lips they expressed their gratitude for the kindness, as they called it, but which was as much a blessing to us as them. I then attended a prayer meeting at the home of two old colored people who were slaves. They can not read or write but they have the true spirit of God in their hearts, and it would do you good to hear them talk. Thus the afternoon has been spent, and I could not wish it to have been otherwise. We had such a good service tonight. One girl was at the altar. The meeting still continues. I expect our meeting gets old to you but I am so much interested in it that it seems I must talk about it. I was glad to receive your letter. Perhaps they might elect you as janitor if you continue as you stated last Sun., but that is the way life goes. Someone must sacrifice a great deal if any thing is accomplished. And I believe that is the one that receives the reward. Our literary society is preparing for a special anniversary programme in March which made me some extra work yesterday. It will be our 20th anniversary. I hope we may be able to make a success of it. Ira has been elected president of the Y.M.C.A. and will attend the Con. with several others from here. It seems that the association here has not done very much work in the last year, and there is great need of improvement. It would suit me just as well for you to visit me during our vacation. I will make it suit any time so you can arrange in regard to your work. I still continue to ask God's guidance in all things. Good Night Lovingly Bertha.
