Dear Friends:
Here it is June 1st - and no letter from the Harris family! Well - here it is! We have enjoyed so much going back over the Christmas letters and cards from many of you. Be assured that you have been remembered in our hearts and prayers.
June 1st finds our family together again with Diane back under the "home roof" after living in the Chi Omega House at Syracuse University campus this past year. Carla arrived from Wooster College at two o'clock this morning; Ellie is with us a few days till she moves into her own apartment. With Suzie and Jimmy always on the home front, it makes quite a gang around our dining table, with the usual laughter, family jokes, and time for worship together.
Diane is looking forward to her Senior year at Syracuse this fall. This past year she has been Moderator of the Campus Christian Fellowship, and recently was elected President of The Student Christian Movement of New York State. As a member of the National Executive Committee for the Presbyterian Student Movement, she has been our "plane-hopper." A young man from Cornell also claims her time and interest. She will be employed this summer at The Institute of Living in Hartford, Connecticut.
Ellie and Carla, our foster-daughters, have each experienced a very profitable year. Ellie is a secretary at the Royal Globe Insurance Company and is relieved that her apartment-hunting is over. Carla finished her Freshman year at Wooster College in Ohio. This summer she will be a counselor at a camp for crippled children.
Mary Suzanne (Suzie) goes into eighth grade at Bellevue Junior High this fall. Today she wore her first high heels to Church. She is becoming quite a young lady and showing excellent progress in flute and piano. We think she will become the professional musician of the family.
James Lowell II (Jimmy) will be 9 this summer. A tall blonde fellow, he is developing every inch an athlete. He is our "eager beavor [sic] Little Leaguer" and pitches for the "Canada Drys." He is doing well in piano, but he hates to practice -- would much rather don his "Zorro" costume and terrorize the neighborhood -- yet he does look quite innocent in his choir robe!
"Mom" as she is affectionately called, keeps that feed bag full for all of us (along with heaps of love). She takes good care of her brood in spite of many outside demands. She has been vice chairman of District 6 in Girl Scouting, and recently took her Troop (including Suzie) on a tour to Washington, D.C. Women's Association, a new Young Adult Group, and choirs are an interesting challenge to her, as well as entertaining many groups in our home (the "Second Manse.")
"Dad" has completed his tenth year at First Church, Syracuse. We will never forget the lovely reception tendered to us by the congregation. Six choirs, preaching one Sunday a month, administering various committees and organizations, as well as Ministerial Relations Chairman of Cayuga-Syracuse Presbytery, keeps "Dad" on the go day and night. Preaching Missions in Puerto Rico and Ottawa, Canada, last year were high moments. Directing the music this spring for Presbyterian laymen assembled in their conventions at New York City, Wichita and Chicago, was again, a thrilling experience.
Oh, we must not forget "Cindy," our minature collie! She is an affectionate companion to us all. She is a good fielder in base ball (catching the ball in her mouth); she understands "play the piano," "outside!", "sit!", "shake hands," etc. If you came to visit us, she would soon be on your lap — fast asleep!
Dad and Mom, Suzie and Jimmy will be leaving for New Hampshire the latter part of this month, where our summer rural parish offers rich opportunities for recreation and friendship in the month of July. Of course, Suzie and Jimmy look forward to the swimming at Hollywood Beach,
We wish for all of you and your loved ones the highest inspiration that summer months can bring to you. If some days of leisure be yours, may you be surrounded not only by the beauty of "our Father's world," but also by the loving regard and affection of friends near and far. Please consider the Harris Household among those friends!
May God richly bless you all!
