Am attending school here having been here about eight wks roommate went home to spend the Holidays I am alone am rooming at Mrs. Perry's I sat up last night all alone to watch the New Year come in came in rather blustery but warm I bowed myself in prayer and asked God to take care of me during this year I also promised Him that I would be more earnest in my Christian life and that I would follow Him wherever He would have me go.
I arose at 7-30 this morning went to the P.O. and then to breakfast at Mrs. Youngs spent the forenoon in writing went to the barber shop got my hair cut @ 20 cts then went to my meal ate a hearty dinner came to my room and spent the time in writing until 6 P.M. went to the P.O. spent the evening in literary pursuits retired @ 10 oclock thanking the Lord for His kind care.
Jan 2; colder, blustery, sunny, not much stir in town spend the day in literary work, writing etc, take two meals I read Talmage's sermon text — To this End was I born. It inspired me to more earnest work and that I should ask God to direct my pursuits in live. I put my working shoes on this eve. and went to the P.O. It is snowing rapidly and the wind is rather disagreeable, purchased some writing materials for 35 cts spent the evening in writing on an oration Subject - Opportunity, Retire 10 P.M.
Jan. 3, A cool but bright morning go to Sab. School at the M. E. Church recited the lesson The kingdom of Christ Bible Class met in my room in afternoon studied the 5, Chap of Daniel. Spend the evening in reading the Golden Gems of life write two letters Retire 11 P.M.
Jan 4, Snowing pretty lively in the morning but ceases about 9 Oclock go to the writing recitation of the Holiday Class have a few hrs; recitation which closes the term
School begins tomorrow and the students are pouring in [...ly]. Mr. Smith returns and we spend the evening in a pleasant visit.
Jan. 5, cloudy, rather cool school commenced today with fond interest I am rooming with J. A. Smith I have seven branches this term Higher Arithmetic Higher Algebra, Grammar, Analysis, Military drill, Teachers' training {...} Class Vocal music will have plenty of work on hand. My program is arranged to retire at 10 P.M. and rise @ 5 A.M. we have altar service in our room and also at our meals. I realize the great importance of [...] to Christ Who is the Author of our faith. Retire 10 P.M.
Jan. 6, blustery students coming in rapidly there is a constant stir. All our rooms are full at Perry's We have fifteen (15) students in our boarding club.
Jan. 7, Snowy; blustery; Mr. Smith and I are together and enjoy each other's company very much.
Jan. 8, Cold snowy school goes on with good interest I receive an express package of medicine Go to the P.O. in the evening get a letter from father containing $25 which was very acceptable, I am wearing my working shoes no and observing the rules of rigid economy. Go to the Philo Literary Society have a very interesting time. The question of Prohibition was debated with great interest, get home 1130
Sat. Jan. 9, rise 630, cold, thermometer stands at 5 below zero. Go to the P.O. and get my order cashed, go to the reading circle at 11 A.M. read and study until 330 go to the library get Dodd's lectures to young men go to the vocal class at 400 Go to the Y. M. & Y.W.C.A. prayer meeting at 630 spend the remainder of the evening in my room. retire 11 Oclock
Sab. Jan 10, 1892. Cold,; 8° below 0 Go to the M.E. S.S., Our Bible class meets at 230 P.M.//Present study the sixth Chap. of Daniel Go to the Y.M.C.A. at 330 Address by Prof. Fess. Subj. purpose in life discussed under three heads Character, Culture, Critical power. Came home spend the evening in writing retire 1030
Jan. 11, getting warmer I drop my Arithmetic recitation will devote more time to literary work gets warmer and rains the ground is covered with ice I go to the P.O. but find it rather difficult to get about Mr. Lamning visits us a little while
Jan. 12, 1892. Snowy cold, Chapel have separate meetings. Prof. Lehr gives good advice
Jan. 13, Stormy, I take my first lesson in drawing
Jan. 14, Snowy, pretty fair sleighing. I have any expenses paid now for ten wks, but after buying a book which it will be necessary for me to get I will come out — No young man should be in debt but as I have money which I can not get hold of I will be obliged to borrow a little. I think these little trials are good for me even if I do have to wear my working shoes in a school among 1200 students.
Jan. 15, A beautiful day the sleigh bells are jingling and all seem merry and gay recitations are interesting and every thing seems to [move?] off quite nicely. The rudimental class in vocal music is very interesting indeed and conducted by an able instructor. I go to Philo Hall in the evening heard the question debated Resolved, That wealth exerts more influence than knowledge... did not stay for rehearsing class came home 9-30
Jan. 16, A lovely morning, clear and the frost covers all the bushes and trees giving them a glorious appearance go to military recitations 9. AM Reading circle 11. AM Bible Class 1–3 PM, came home study a short time when Mr. Smith, a friend of my roommate comes in We go to Y.M.C.A. meeting 6.–30 Subject of lesson Opportunity. Our debating club then met organized and debated the question Resolved, That Science has done more for civilization than religion. Came home slept with another student in another room.
Jan 17, 92 Sab. A beautiful morning the weather is moderating some. Breakfast 7–30 S.S. at M.E. Church Subj. Drunkenness dinner 12– Bible Class 2–30 Subj. Joseph Y.M.C.A. 3–30, Bible reading which was a great help to me. Supper 5 P.M. spend the evening in writing I read today in a holiness book and I believe it will be a great benefit to me, I realize how weak, sinful, and unworthy I am.
