Context

[Iberia, OH, to Mr. J. H. Harris, Ada, Ohio, Lock Box 28] Iberia O. July 31, 1895. Mr. J. H. Harris Ada O. My Dear Joe: — While seated alone in the study I will spend a while with you. Would that you were here this afternoon, John would not disturb our conversation. But John says I am very imaginative, so I will try and make use of that power, as the reality is impossible. I rec'd your very welcome letter Mon. John's think I am very good to attend the P.O. and I surely do know how to appreciate it. John & Lucy are away attending a wedding this evening & the children & I are keeping house so we will just have a fine time with no one to disturb us. Yesterday we entertained the Pres. minister & family from Galion and I still feel quite dignified. They are surely an inspiring family and worthy of association. This has been quite a busy week thus far and from the outlook will continue to be. We are invited out in the country again tomorrow. I wish you might enjoy some of these days with us. While I am enjoying such feasts you are digging away at your books. I feel that I am indeed having more than my share. My meditations were stopped by the cry “Come down Berfy.” I have succeeded in getting Horace to sleep and brought Helen up to help me, so I have a new inspiration. I will proceed. While I think of it, I want to say that I am in favor of those Photos. That is — you having yours taken immediately. I am tired looking at this old one for it lacks something on the upper lip and is not as handsome other ways as the original. I have been thinking I would mention it for some time but w'd forget it when I would write. I suggest that we leave the other kind until a later date. I expect to get some as soon as I get home if not sooner, and then we can arrange them together to suit ourselves. I am in favor of the contract when the first opportunity is presented. I hear that D. I. has gone down to the old home to visit. Of course he will have an enjoyable time. I often wish I could be there a while myself. I presume you have gone to Mrs. Keller's before this and hope you enjoy something better than water & crackers. I hear a great many compliments on my friend's talk at the Pres. church. (I will not ask for a “trade last” for you have not a very good chance to procure them) Miss Ervin's minister was back again last Sun. I hardly think it is fair for him to come so often when you are so far away but she seems to think so. You need not cast a jealous eye toward Iberia for your visit proved itself sufficient for “Dame fortune” and myself as well. I surely look on demonstrations of affection as being very sacred in it is surely not right or proper to indulge in them with simply a friend, I am saving them all for my devoted lover, and then can not bestow more than he deserves. The summer is passing so rapidly, and I am glad it is for I believe you promised a visit to Westerville this fall. May the dear Master bless and keep us in our work and make us useful in this vineyard now. Your own true one Bertha Lambert.
