Letter from Joseph Hastings Harris (Ada, Ohio) to Bertha Elizabeth Lambert (Westerville, Ohio), 26 December 1894

Context

[Ada, OH, to Miss Bertha Lambert, Westerville, Ohio.] Ada, O. Dec. 26, 1894. Miss Lambert, Westerville, O. Kind Friend: Your welcome missive came to hand this morning, found me lonesome enough though not despairing. This reminds me of being isolated in the W.Va. hills only no hills are in view. I am studying, reading, meditating, thinking, writing, singing?, going to P.O. and having a pretty good time after all. Reading your Christmas greeting reminded me that I had most forgotten that yesterday was Christmas. I was in my room all day save for a short walk. I sometimes wonder how we should celebrate our National Holiday but surely there ought to be more zeal and enthusiasm than I manifested yesterday. If not disappointed in making connections at Dunkirk, I will leave here 8 A.M. and reach Col. 10:40, but if disappointed in this will get there 2:40 P.M. Shall try to make the 10:40 time as I wish to stop at Col. awhile.  If you see a brick-layer get off the 3:30 train at Westerville just say “it's me.” It is useless for me to say that it is with great pleasure I look forward to this visit. I feel highly favored in having this opportunity of visiting you in your parental home, as it certainly will bring to mind the associations of former yrs. I hope you are enjoying yourself better than anybody. Asking that the Holy Spirit may watch over us until we shall meet, I bid you “good night.” Your devoted friend, J. H. Harris
