Context

[Ada, OH, to Miss Bertha Lambert, Westerville, Ohio] Lock Box 28, Ada, O. 10, 5 7:30 A.M. Miss Lambert, Westerville, O. My Darling Bertha: I write a few lines this morning to say that all is well with me. Your message came in due time and brought such a draught of Love and inspiration that it still clings to me. I arrived here 9 A.M. Monday and went to rec. Prof. Schoonover said “Harris I didn't expect to see you back today, they said you went to see your girl.” I think I got the itemizer sufficiently bribed to keep still although I have not seen the paper. This has been a short and happy wk. to me. You just seemed to open your heart's door during our visit and let me step in so much further than ever before, and I confess it was really the happiest experience of my life. To say that I love you, Bertha, does not express much when compared with what I have felt this wk. Somehow a feeling of sadness comes over me to think of our separation when we are so united in one. Mother Heller seems to think there must be something definite in our plans, and I am more than thankful that there is something more than castles in the assertion. I reread our C't and it seemed to say more than usual, since it is written by your own loving hand and bears your signature in such a way that it means worlds to me, and our visit confirms me more than ever of the propriety and rightfulness of our plans. I feel sure that God gives His approval of the same and I want to act and improve my time in such a manner that I may be able to fill at least one life full of happiness, and it is such a pleasure to know that you are that one. I thought I would write so you could get this this evening and take your usual time for answering as I can write during the wk. perhaps better than you can, so if this finds you tonight you can have the Sab. hrs. to think and write, but should it not reach you until Monday, if you will answer at once I will write so you can take next Sab. We had a nice program last night lasting until 10:20, considerable red tape, but I managed to get through it all right. Thanks for the “trade last” but I fear if the lady should hear me read Latin she would think it was not Prof. Scott. How are those little icicles? I think if I could get to see you at least once in two wks I would be the happiest man in Ada. The work went on nicely during my absence. Prof. Lehr addressed the boys. I have to arrange today for soliciting campaign. I would rather be whipped. This next wk. closes our term so examinations are in order. I must close as it is train time. May God keep my Bertha safe and happy. A gushing kiss to you, Your Lover J. H. Harris. My bribe did not work as I now have the Herald. I shall write to Ira soon.
