July 13, 1897.
Your letter came to Athens yesterday morning. After writing the note to you last Sat. I went to Athens in the evening and as my finger pained so bad I went to the Dr's office at once and had my finger lanced to the bone after which I went out to uncle's where I found Ira, Gary, and Seth. I addressed the people there Sun. and had a very nice audience. Last night I came out with the boys and am now at home. Everything looks nice about here and I appreciate being at home but I don't like writing with left hand.
The felon is doing nicely. I do not know why I have a sore finger just when I have at least 5 wks. work on hand, but all is well and God is good. I shall not question his rulings.
I can't write much but I still love you and would dearly love to see you.
I hope I may be able to do so soon. I may have to be off quite a while. Pray that I may be patient, every one is kind.
I do not know when this will go to office, but you will pardon the delay. This is the first chance I have had to write.
I sleep very little, but do not worry about me. By using the knife at once it will be over sooner.
Your devoted Lover
J. H. Harris
