Mr. J. H. Harris,
Athens O.
My Darling Joe: — I rec'd your letter since dinner. One of the boys saw me smiling as I read it and said, “Now Miss Lambert has gotten some good letters.” I was glad to hear from you, but sorry indeed to know you are suffering with a felon. However I broke it is better long before this. You must not worry because you are compelled to quit work, doubtless you need a rest, but I am sorry you must take it in such a painful way. Two or three of the students here have been having felons.
Well the conference is nearly over and some of the delegates have left already. Two of the girls in our tent left today and it almost makes the rest of us feel lonely. Last evening there was quite a storm here and it has been quite cool and rainy ever since. We go around with our wraps on and have to keep our tent closed up so that it is not so pleasant in many ways. I have seen the dining room manager and no place is vacant for me so I will leave here in the morning at 7 o'clock. Today I rec'd a letter from Uncle Jesse stating that he is very sorry I can not visit them, but they are spending this warm weather at the beach in New Jersey and who could blame them? Miss McLardie, a girl from Dayton, will stay in Chicago with me tomorrow and unless I should find Uncle Merrick I will leave Chicago tomorrow evening at 7 o'clock. I will get to Columbus Wed. morning about 6. I think I will write as soon as I get home. If you have to lay off very long come up and let me doctor your finger. Don't you think it would help it? I believe you will have a birthday soon. I have a little present for you but will not send it tonight as I am hurried. I am sorry to leave but very anxious to get home, especially if there is any hope of you coming up.
Please pardon this hasty letter with a pencil, and love me as much as ever.
Your loving one
Bertha Lambert.
