Dear brother, sister, nephew, niece and grand-niece:
I expected to write you sooner but in our stir up at Christmas we laid your address aside and failed to locate it until yesterday when I phoned Mrs Warson while at Westerville. The Educational conference was in session at Westerville so I went out with Revs. Mills, Rife, and the artist Mr Williams. Our Conference arranged with Mr Williams (member of Avondale church) to paint a portrait of Pres. Clippinger. Yesterday in chapel the portrait was unveiled and presented to the College in the presence of faculty, students, and members of the conference. It was a very impressive program. Edwin Burtner gave the chapel address in a masterly manner. Mrs Warson told me something of your Christmas dinner etc.
We saw Dr Timberman this morning and he seemed pleased with the way Bertha's eyes are improving. She does not suffer nearly so much with them. Of course she still gropes about in almost utter darkness, but is very patient about it. James was home from Dec. 24 to Dec. 29th. They are changing pastors at Glens Falls so he had to be there to look after things. He is well and very happy in his work. Richard came home Dec 23rd and remained until Jan. 2nd. He seems to be making a good start in his work. Paul did not get home. Dan finished his work in Chicago Dec. 15 and went to New York. All four remembered us at Christmas in a very gracious manner; a good radio, books, etc. etc. We are reading Hertzler's "Horse and Buggy Doctor," with great interest. Richard is considering trading the old machine for something which has some resemblance of an automobile. Our church work goes about as usual. The ladies are making doughnuts today.
Referring to my diary of Jan. 5th 1934 I read "Up at 6:30, Pack and leave 10:50 for Gainesville. Call on Dr Ralph Engle 2111 S.W. 11th St. Lunch at Coral Gables then take Tamiami Trail etc." Nov. 23, 1933 I read "The five of us start out to see the city. Went to the Beach, then drove down to Cocoanut Grove, saw Ida's 20 acres, stopped at airport of Pan-American Airways and went through the "Caribbean Clipper" etc. The next day "Went to Coral Gables then on to Homestead where we bought lunch, then drove North to Peter's Station, saw Jordan's 163 acres and ate lunch in front of Jordan's old house (where storm caught them in '26). We then visited Chapman Field where the U.S. has a Horticultural Station and Army Post. Visited U.S. Destroyer "Badger." As I recall the ground for Peter's Station was taken off a corner of Jordan's land. Jordan bought his land from a real estate dealer named Cast (as I recall) who has a beautiful home not far from Redland. One Saturday Richard and I went on R.R. excursion to Key West. I thing the storm destroyed the R.R. and perhaps has not been rebuilt. I note a little further in my diary that Mr W. Cast lived on Cocoanut Palm Drive 4 1/2 miles West of Princeton with P.O. address Homestead. On Dec. 31, 1933 I read "Took Jordan and Ida to Pres. Church (First) in Coral Gables to hear Bishop Batdorf preach from Ps 46:4–5."
I attended the opening session of the new Legislature. Republicans are quite jubilant since the election. I shall try to see Mr Bricker inaugurated Jan. 9th. Heard Pres. Roosevelt yesterday. I assisted in the funeral of Dr S. F. Daugherty Dec. 30. We did not visit the beach at Cocoanut Grove. We hope your are having an enjoyable time and that it will prove a fruitful year to all in health, information and inspiration. Mr Cast mentioned above claimed great curative powers of the water in that community. We visited Mr Cast Dec. 13, 1933. I suggest that you keep quite full diary. Mine is limited and now wish I had kept fuller diary. We are anxious to hear that Dan is making fine improvement. Write when convenient for you. A little later I may give brief outline of our course to Gainesville. Bertha sends love and good wishes to all.
Affectionately, Bertha and Joe
