Story of the Cross
1.
A story most lovely I'll tell
Concerning the Lord from the skies
He suffered it is known very well
That sinners poor sinners might rise
He left his exalted abode
For man by transgression was lost
He appeared the wrath of our God
Consenting to die n the cross
2.
O was it for crimes I have done
My Savior was hailed with a kiss
By Judas the traitorous man
Was ever such mercy as this
The rebels all joined in a band
Confined him and led him away
The cords were wrapped round his soft hands
O look at him sinner I pray
3.
At Pilate's stone pillar he lay
His body was scourged with a whip
Not one of them ever did hear
A railing word fall from his lips
They made him a crown out of thorns
Our Jesus they did so abuse
They mocked him and laughed him to scorn
And hailed him the King of the Jews
4.
They ladened the lamb with the cross
They drove him up Calvary's hill
Stop mourner a moment and pause
All nature was silent and still
They drove the nails through his hands
The blood also flowed from his feet
Behold him how passive he stands
To look at the sight it was great
5.
He cried O my Father and God
You've left me to suffer in pain
The cross was all covered with blood
The temple's veil sent into twain
He groaned his last when he died
The Sun he refused to shine
They rushed the spear in his side
That loving redeemer was mine
6.
He fought the hard battle and won
His kingdom and offered it free
O Christian look forward and run
That kingdom I hope we shall see
I long to mount up to the skies
In Paradise make my abode
To dwell with bright angels on high
And rest with my pacified God
