Dear Bette:
Since I last wrote to you I have been getting into some boxes and have found a lot more stuff. I found a letter from your father dated Ap. 5, 1960. I supposed all along you had all these letters from the 30s that dad had but it seems you father sent them to aunt Bertha, of all people. Luckily I made copies of all of them and have those myself. Today I wrote Richard Harris, a first cousin of mine, aunt Bertha's son and asked him if he still had them. He is a bachelor and teaches music and lives in Columbus, O. The other still living brother is Dan who has been living in Florida but was to move to N.C.
Your father speaks of not being able to find a Winnifred Cartwright but you said you found her family history. Now all the things he wrote to me you probably already have. But it was a long letter.
Then there was a cousin of dad's by the name of Mr W.O.Z Endicott of Traer Iowa and I corresponded with him some. I wrote him a letter of which I have a copy and here I will write to you the letter.

Mr Ooly Endicott
Traer, Iowa.
Dear cousin:
I live in a suburb of Philadelphia in Delaware County, Ridley Township but with a Morton post office address. We moved here in 1953. I am the oldest child of William Otterbein Lambert (b. Feb 25, 1875) of Westerville, Ohio and Loretta Adams (b. Nov. 16, 1874). My father your first cousin had 3 children, Pauline Lambert Warfel, Lucile Lambert Webner and Charles Otterbein Lambert. My father visited me here once before his death in Sept. 1954. He was with my most recent step mother Henrietta Dupree Lesher Lambert who still resides at 164 N. State St. Westerville, Ohio.
For a long time I have been urged to look up family history and serve as secretary. However I was not inclined until I went to Westerville this last tiemm (June 1958) for my anniversary (35th) of graduation form Otterbein College and Mary Sue Webner's graduation (she is Lucile's daughter). Mary Sue also got married in Orrville, O. their home, in June to Fred Smith of Shelby, Ohio and Otterbein graduate of 1957. She now has 5 boys - oldest 15 pr 16 youngest 4.
We three separated some pictures and some papers. Among them were a large bunch of letters written about 1930 from the first cousins. These inspired me to go to the free library of Philadelphia and the Penna. Historical Society to see what I could find.
When I began to uncover facts I was very much surprised that my father had known so little or said so little about his family during his lifetime altho he seemed to think a great deal of them.
I started with the Lamberts but so far have not found John Lambert's father and brothers and sisters.
The New Jersey Archives; First Series V xxi New Jersey Records 1664-1703 say that Thos. Barclay, John Lambert and others were given 5,670 acres on the West side of Raratan R. over against Amboy divided between above 1685-6. This was called patented. From there to 1715 I have not found yet. I suppose our John Lambert was a son of that John Lambert, or a grandson. That I have not filled in.

Much is revealed in the Quaker Index of old meetings in Ohio, The South, New York and Pennsylvania. The Quakers kept very accurate records.
I have never found that Abner Lambert II ever had any children by Susanah Faries (which is actually Susanah Faris). This was in Belmont County but the Quakers spread over Ohio. Came to Brownsville Penna according to records in 1800 and Ohio by Wheeling 1801.
I can't find any Mattemarket N.C. There is Mattamuskell, no place new, but a lake on the edge of a swamp. So far I have never seen Maggie Hughes and John and Matthew mentioned. They may be in New Jersey archives however.
(You know you told me where they lived and how Maggie and Matthew died and how they were Presbyterians and so were not mentioned in the Quaker records.)
The birth date of Winnifred Cartwright 1750 and the marriage makes her 50 in 1800 when they were about to settle in Belmost Co. O. Barnesville. Abner II and his wife Winnifred and all their children went to Ohio 1799, 1800.
Younger than Anna 1795 Winnifred had 2 daughters who died 1799, 1800. When she died I have not found. I find where Abner married Susanah Faris 1811. So she died between 1800 and 1811.
(They lived in Winchester Virginia for a year on the way to Ohio and they lived in Redstone Old Fort (later Brownsville) for a year.)
Now I have also been making a study of Stantons. There were 2 books, very large ones. The first was on Thomas Stanton's descendants and the other on Robert Stanton's descendants.
The book is: Our Ancestors the Stantons by William Henry Stanton (1922). We are of this family.
.........
I left out some of the letter
.........................
Abigail Stanton took her 6 children (or more) to Ohio after Benjamin died (he wanted to go too but could not because he died). She was the mother of David who was the father to Edwin M. (there is so much of this I can't write it all).
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My father wrote a record of his family. Some of it may not be exactly as accurate as it could be but almost.
Maybe your father has a copy but I don't know.
RECORD OF THE LAMBERT FAMILY IN THE U.S.A.
(Compiled by William Otterbein Lambert. Part of this information was copied from a book brought to Ohio from North Carolina. Part of the Stanton side of unknown origin, but possibly part of it from Grandfather Lambert. The Embrees were French; They escaped the Huguenot persecution, went to Holland (some went to England) and on to Philadelphia and then some on to Ohio. The French is L'Embree which was shortened to Embree in this country).
(You probably are not much interested in the Embree family but Deborah Vernon Embree was my grandmother Lambert).
JOHN LAMBERT: He was a great grandson of JOHN LAMBERT, the leading general in Cromwell's army. He was born in 1715. His wife was Elizabeth Sayes (born 1716)
Their children were:
Sarah 1738; Moses '40; Aaron '43; Jessie'45; Abner I '46; ABNER II '47; John and Hannah '53; Elizabeth '55; David '57; All lived in Elizabethtown, NJ. John Lambert himself had seven sisters and seven brothers.
ABNER LAMBERT II born 1747; married Maggie Hughes b. 1751 in 1774. Children: John and Matthew
[End of Page 2]
(Now this is where you found out she was Presbyterian and that she and Matthew died)
ABNER'S second wife Winifred Cartwright b. 1750 and moved to Mattemarket, N.C. (I see here that Mattmarket was in N.C. but I wrote to Un. of N.C. and they could not locate it).
ABNER AND WINIFRED were married in 1780.
Their children: Jesse 1781; Benjamin 1785; also note there were 2 which dad had not written in Mary and Joseph 1783; Albert 1786; Elizabeth and Orlate 1788; ABNER I 1790. Daniel 1792; Annie 1795. (Now this makes 10 for Winifred but I do believe the Quaker records mention 2 baby girls who came after when she was about 49 or 50 and they died. That makes 12) ABNER Married again in 1811 to Suzannah Faris (Did she have any children?) Dad said there were 16 altogether. 12 and 2 are 14 so what to the other 2?
ABNER LAMBERT Jr: b. 1790; married Elizabeth Stanton b. 1798 in 1817. They were actually married in Jan 1817 and they had their first baby Oct. 1817 but dad has put 1818 (be sure she was legitimate!) Hannah was the first b. 1817. Joseph b. 1820; Chalkley b. 1822; Barclay b. 1825; Elwood 1828; Mary b. 1831; Abner 1833; DANIEL WEBSTER LAMBERT 1837; REECE 1838; Elizabeth 1843
W. O. Lambert's personal note:
"I remember well my grandmother Elizabeth Lambert. She died about 1892. She taught me to knit when I was a boy; also to spin; I have a photograph of the old house with the big chestnut trees and remember once in being in her home before she came to live with her children."
Rev. DANIEL WEBSTER LAMBERT Was born 1837; was married to Deborah Vernon Embree (b. 1840 Dec. 26.) in 1858. Their children Ida 1859; Eva 1861; Frank 1863; Alva 1865; Hannah Lucy 1867; Daniel Ira 1870; Bertha E. 1872; William Otterbein 1875; Carolyn D. 1877; Elsie Maude 1880;

They raised 7 children: Arthurs were: Arthur Jr.; Allinson; Daniel; George (who died as a college student on the Un. of Minn campus. Nellie's were Jonathan and David twins; and a girl.
My dad's comment:
"Arthur became a great scientist, specializing in Botany and the lows of heredity of plants, was responsible for the development of hybrids in corn wheat oats and barley."
Jonathan died as a young college man. David had 3 children a pair of twins, a girl and a boy and a girl older. The younger woman sister, was married young and her husband was a prof on the Un. of Miami campus in Ohio. She finished her education after her children were born.

[End of Page 3]
FRANK died of diphtheria in 1880.
ALVA Embree married Nellie Randall. (lived together till late in life and then Alva lived with Glenn and Nellie with her daughter Marie.)
Married Nellie Randall, Children were Glenn, Clair, Frank, Ralph and Marie.
(Marie is the only on living now. She was once married but is divorced and goes by her maiden name.)

Charles has no children.
ELSIE M. married Rev. Wallin Reibel in 1903. They went as missionaries to Africa where Elsie died in 1903. She was a martyr to her love for God's work. (She was only in Sierra Leone 3 months when she caught African fever and died.)
Now I will add a few things.
Ida lived on a farm in Kansas. She taught school as a young married woman because they could not get a school teacher. She took her baby Nellie with her. She did not go to Otterbein because she was at home in S. Ohio when her lover came along and asked her to marry him. She and her mother had births at the same time Arthur and Elsie.
Ida did not go to Otterbein either because everyone lived in S. Ohio and her lover also came along and asked her to marry him. Frank died about the time Elsie was born and so of course he never went to college (was 17)
All the rest went to Otterbein because grandpa moved to Westerville Ohio and preached in the neighborhood of Westerville and Columbus. Alva did not graduate. He got married down in S. Ohio. Ira graduated. Hannah went part way. Otterbein, Carolyn and Elsie graduated way back in 1900, 1901 and 1903 but Bertha went half way thru and graduated in 1923 with Paul and Dan her sons.
