Context

[No envelope] Jan. 3, 1987 Dear Dan, Thank you for your interest and patience with my situation! I am sorry if you had trouble trying by telephone. Thanks for your Christmas card. I have had wonderful help from the Bierleys (Paul and Pauline and their son, John) in transportation to hospital and medical help, plus extensive help in grocery shopping, donated meals, etc. Pauline Bierley made three nice floral arrangements for Dad, Mother, and Ted, and took me to Westerville about Dec. 10 to place them. I have been seeing Dr. Sickles at O.S.U. Family Practice Center about every ten days. In addition, a visiting nurse from the Columbus City Health Service comes here weekly to draw blood samples and make other checks which are promptly reported to the university. I have done no teaching since middle November, and was hospitalized Nov. 17–28. The recovery has been up and down. Most affected has been the right leg, the center of trouble called Deep Vein Thrombosis (clotting). Great cautions and checking has been concerned with possible circulation of clots upward to lungs, etc. So far this has not happened, according to X-rays. But there has been lots of aching in leg, back, neck, with excessive general fatigue. I return to Dr. Sickles on Jan. 8 for general review and recommendations. For over a month I have been taking five kinds of medication in a crazy schedule that even includes some dosages at 12 midnight and 2 A.M. Part of the doctor’s regimen requires that I keep off my feet a great deal and keep the right foot elevated. This has put me in touch with television. I have enjoyed the holiday programming, especially WOSU and other public broadcasting. I was surprised yesterday to see a CBS “60 Minutes” visit to Casa Verdi retirement center. Many former performing artists call it home, and it apparently was established and financed by Verdi himself. O.S.U. surprised many with the Cotton Bowl victory over Texas A & M: 28-12. And in a home game, Cleveland beat the NY Mets. And the OSU-Indiana basketball game had Ohio keeping close (even ahead for awhile) in spite of the illness & sidelining of their strongest scorer. John may be interested in a couple of clippings about the game — (enclosed.) I am living in an apartment in North Columbus, about one block east of High Street, with North High School about 2 blocks north (it’s the one where Paul taught several years.) Sorry you had to wait. You have my best wishes for 87. Love and happy memories Dick P.S. I had cards from Caroline and Jim’s family, and from Tim Farris and Patricia. P.S. Holiday check enclosed.
