July 24, 97.
Here I sit in the hotel office. I came over yesterday. My finger is improving slowly. Of course I had a nice time at home. I saw the Dr. here yesterday and he told me not to go to work, so here I sit.
Two different men want me to work now. I met your letter at Sharpsburg as I came over and got it there. I am so glad to hear of your feeling so well.
Perhaps you may not be bothered much this yr in your work. Seth wants me to keep “bachelor's hall” this winter and he will cook for me.
If I should go to school here I would take up with the offer at once, but I am not able to decide that now.
I never felt so much like simply accepting God's providences contentedly as now. Of course in one sense it nearly makes me sick to think of missing my work while such an opportunity is given, but perhaps some other plan may come up.
I do not know yet what I shall do. I have thought of going out home, but will have to stay here until C. W. returns so I can find out how he is situated in his work. He is at Albany and will commence a job here soon and may have some tinkering work for me to do.
If he has nothing for me to do I think I shall either go out home or help you keep house a day or two.
They run an excursion to Col. tomorrow but it would give only about 3 hrs at W. and you know we could not get our visit out in that time.
I think though, we would be acquainted as soon as we set eyes on each other.
If C. W. comes in this A.M. perhaps I can come to you tonight. If I should come I will get to Col. either 7:155 or 7:55.
I think you need not look for me, but I will come if possible. Do not stay at home if you think of going anywhere for the evening.
11 A.M. Laura Slowter has just come in and no one to take her out home so I will take her out.
Good bye “dear”
Your Lover
J. H. Harris.
