[Ada, OH, to Miss Bertha Lambert, Bartlett, Ohio, “Washington Co.” on Ohio Normal University stationery.]
Ada, Ohio, May 5, 1895.
Miss Lambert,
Bartlett, Ohio.
My Loving Bertha:
Once more I attempt to express to you the love that wells up from my affections. You know that is a difficult task with a pen, but you came about as near that as ever I saw, in your message last wk., had it been from the pen of any one else it certainly would have been flattery, but when I remembered that it was from my own true and loving Bertha I knew from experience that it was all meant and I drank deep from the fountain of inspiration and thanked God for the events of the past year.
I surely would smile for a whole wk. if you should step in to break my meditation.
I know you are anxious to get through your school and I feel anxious also in sympathy for you. Do you know on what days the High School commencement will be held?
Things are moving along with about the same intensity as usual. The contest is to be held next Thursday. Were you at home then I should take advantage of that opportunity, but I can afford to miss a day or two of school most any time on such a mission as that. I never before got into such a mesh of committee work, in Y.M.C.A., Society, and Prohibition Club.
I spoke about the Bible in the curriculum. They give it the entire year with daily recitations making it elective and may be substituted, full credit being given. The following is the plan,
Prob. teachers
First Fall Term Bible Hist. Prof. Maglott
Second ” ” Prophesy ” Schoonoorer
Winter ” Life of Christ ” Park.
Spring ” Pauline Epistles ” Fess
Normal ” Literature of Bible ” Darst.
I gave one of the missionary addresses this afternoon in Y.M.C.A.
It affords pretty good drill in literary lines after all, as it has caused me to prepare three addresses to deliver before the Associations this term. I wish to go on the society stage next wk., but may not get to do so.
The new building is under course of erection. You will notice the poem in the Herald by Miss Harvey, perhaps you were acquainted with her. We boarded at the same house two years ago. It would be difficult to find a nobler and more Christian girl. She is sinking with consumption.
Judging from the sentiment of your letters I don't wonder that you might talk about Harris in your sleep, but don't see why you should spell in the plural. As time is limited I reluctantly leave you as you remember I always did stay as long as possible. May the Dear Master guard and protect us both until we shall meet face to face is the earnest prayer of your devoted lover,
J. Hastings Harris.
P.S. Had I better answer that substitute letter which Grace wrote? {J. H. H.}
