Context

[Westerville, OH, to Mr. J. H. Harris, Ada, Ohio, Lock Box 28] Westerville O., Sept. 15, '95. Mr. J. H. Harris. Ada O. My Dear Joe: — While the rest are all at church and my thoughts involuntarily fly to the western part of the state, I will try to be there myself as nearly as possible. I too have been trying to be on the sick list, and think I succeeded pretty well yesterday as I escaped Saturday's work. But I feel much better today and think I will have to go to work tomorrow. I am enjoying school immensely. I think my studies are just fine. We are reading “The Hist. of Rome” instead of Caesar, and in Greek Prof. does a pretty good part of the reciting so far. I have English Hist. instead of Ancient. I was indeed surprised at myself in regard to the choice. But I feel that I have made the right choice. Please do not think that I expect to give up music entirely for I hope I can always study that, but so many look at music as simply an accomplishment for pastime, that I felt it would be hardly right to devote all my time to that. I promise to take the best possible care of my eyes. I hope you will not worry about it, for I will not continue my studies if the work is too much for them. I dreamed of being on Lake Erie last night. Our folks seem to think the excursion all right, only Mother said she was quite uneasy all day Aug 24. I have told the story of the accident so much, that I have had serious thoughts of writing a book concerning it? Miss Chandler said if I did not write to her she would read my letters written to you, so according to that I presume she reads them for I have written her one postal-card since I returned. But I shall write her a long letter soon. 4 P.M. I did not finish my letter this forenoon and just after dinner Ed Hopkins (the one who married Becca Lambert) & family with some of their Columbus friends came in for an hr. or two. The street cars make Westerville profile quite prominent, when it comes to entertaining their friends. The st. car company has bought the fair grounds and talk of running the line out Park St. so you can get off at our door. I see by the Herald that the Franks & Philos are getting quite friendly. I presume D. I. & I will receive a call from one of those “greatest societies on earth.” If you were here this afternoon we would have the conversation to ourselves for Marvin nor W. O. are neither one here and I could soon get rid of the rest, or you could if I could not. I wish I might help you get your lesson for Y.M.C.A. again. That was surely one of the pleasantest lessons I ever studied. If at any time I become discouraged or think life is hard, I just take that c't. out of the envelope and that gives me inspiration enough for almost anything. School surely seems more pleasant than two yrs. ago, because of the inspiration of your life to me. May God keep you safe & pure. Your Sweetheart Bertha Lambert.
