Context

[Westerville, OH, to Mr. J. H. Harris, Ada, Ohio] Westerville O., Nov. 17, 1895. Mr. J. H. Harris Ada O. My Darling Joe: This evening finds me at this very pleasant kind of work. I have attended three such good services today. I believe I never attended a better C.E. It was memory service, no bibles or song books were used, everything was given by memory. Your letter was received Fri. morning, and was surprised to find the penalty for my naughtiness so light. However I think I am in no danger while you are so far away. It seems very nice to have Ira as himself again. This afternoon we were discussing corn popping, and he said if I would do the popping today he would pop “lots” of corn for Joe during holidays. I replied that I thought you would rather have a letter than the corn, but before I could do either here came that Mr. Cornetet. Elsie had seen him coming and knew my trick of slipping of upstairs, and had locked the door that opens into the kitchen, and when he came in there I stood trying to open the door —. But what do you care about such nonsense. Last week the county S.S. convention was held in W. I was only able to hear one address, and that by Mr. Laurence which was fine. Is it possible that it is only about five weeks until Xmas? The last year has surely been the shortest one I ever witnessed. I do not think it will matter at all what time you come, but I would enjoy being with you over one Sun at least. I fear your folks think I am very selfish with you, but I do not wish to be to such an extent that I will keep you from going home. Just arrange things to suit you and it will be all right with me I assure you. Last night I attended a fine musical recital. It made me think I wanted to take music. But we can not do everything at once. I could sympathize with some of the soloists who were somewhat frightened. You spoke of retiring early. I hardly know what you call early. If it is 10 & 11 P.M. then I retire early. Please excuse this queer letter. I think I could talk with you better than I can write tonight. Good night. Your Loving Bertha Lambert.
