Context

[No Envelope] October 15, 1926 Dear Mama: - On the N & W train. Had meeting on [-------------] Wed afternoon and [---------] at night. [Walter] is making a good start in his work. I came down to Williamsburg Thurs. A.M., spoke to a little congregation of women in afternoon at Williamsburg and there conducted business session at Bloom Rose at night. Had to contend with the usual low ideals and [scraps.] I wonder that they do not get weary of it [themselves.] I took dinner and supper at McCormick's who live in an undesirable house. I slept and took breakfast at Jas. Runyan's then took train 7:59. Richard can live over this trip. The forests are beautiful and the scenery splendid. There are only four passengers in our coach and three get off now but here comes a school girl so I am not entirely alone. Farmers are hustling with their work. I am to be with [Allebasgh] and White tonight. Presume I will know about trip to W. Va when I get to [Portsmo.] Tomorrow is your birthday. In making my schedule I tried to plan to be at home, but it meant the delay of this [long] trip another week. There is no way to estimate how much your life has meant to me and I trust that you may have many more birthdays. Whether I send a material present or not you know that I am with you in thought. With people at our age it is uncertain how long we may be permitted to be together and I suppose it need cause us no worry if only we fill the little niche of life's program the best we can. I get pretty weary of this constant going and the foolishness of a lot of people but I suppose if people were all perfect there would be no need of our efforts. I am deeply solicitous that all four of the boys may make all that is possible of their opportunities now. It was on this trip 6 years ago that word came to me at Portsmouth of Theodore's going to the hospital. I trust that all goes well with you. If Bank sends notice about Paul's note you had better pay the interest. Affectionately J.H. Harris P.S. Safe at Portsm. Letters [read or recd.] I go on to W. Va over Sunday Papa
