My Darling Joe: — Your letter just rec'd. I am well and have hardly seen a spare moment since you left. It is too bad you had to wait so long in Columbus. I went back home after you left and Lora wanted me to go up and stay all night with them as they were alone. I forgot that I would be expected to stay awake and visit until 10 o'clock and so I went. I came home yesterday morning, looked the house over, and especially the rooms you had occupied and felt that their main feature of attraction had departed. What a sacred solemn silence reigned through the house. But I thought I must get to studying so I went up stairs and stayed until dinner time. Just as I was called to dinner I looked out my window and saw Lucy, Helen and Dwight coming up the st. Lucy stayed until 2:00. She was on her way home from Dayton. Father and Mother went with her to the park and brought Mrs. Mayne, John's mother, back with them. She stayed until this morning so you see how the time has been spent since you left. We look for Mamie Lambert today. I have not had time to get lonesome but still my mind has been wandering away off some place seeking for something which is not near at hand. But I have not cried any; I just felt that God was working things for His glory and our good. I do not know but there was something in the way we separated last Spring. I am sure I felt much better satisfied this time. Lucy said tell you she would love to see you and that you need not run off every time just before she came. I think our visit was just complete; I surely never enjoyed one more. I feel that it will always be one of those bright spots in our lives. Won't it be lovely when we can have a visit like that which will have no separations. I took Mrs. Mayne through the college and Association building before breakfast as she had to leave about 7. It made me just begin to realize that school will soon open. I am so thankful that my eyes seem so well. I believe it is simply through God's help that they are so strong and I trust He will continue to give me strength for study.
Now may He guide us in the right way and keep us very near to Him.
Your own true Sweetheart,
Bertha E. Lambert.
