Context

[Westerville, OH, to Mr. J. H. Harris, Athens, Ohio, Box 219] Westerville, O., May 28, '96. Mr. Harris, Athens, O. My Darling Joe: — I have returned from society, written invitations to the boys' societies to attend our open session, and now have come to the best of all. I wonder where you are and what you are doing. A penny for your thoughts! I would much rather you were here and then possibly I might know then. I was very glad to know that you arrived safe and did not miss connections again, although I am very glad you missed your train Tues. evening if it did not throw you out in regard to your work. The teachers have used me real well. I have nothing to make up except Geometry, and I am sure I was a thousand times paid for that. Our visit would surely have been very incomplete if you had left at 2 P.M. as you first suggested. Yesterday proved to be quite a long day after such an inspiration had disappeared. I spoke to Ira concerning the work which you mentioned. He thinks there might be some work done here if you could be here next Mon. & Tues. Quite a number will go home before comm. I wish it were so you could come and do some work here and enjoy comm. with it. We rec'd word that Leora Lambert is quite sick. She has not been well for some time. The thieves Mr. Bushnell spoke of have been caught; they proved to be two boys here in town. They will go to the penitentiary if they are old enough. It must seem strange to be out of school going about as you are, but I believe it has many good lessons in it. My prayer is that God may continually keep us faithful & humble, and prosper us in all that we undertake. Good-night. Your own true one, Bertha Lambert.
